Kevin Stratvert: LM Studio Tutorial
Kevin demonstrates a visual app: finding a model, downloading it, loading it, and chatting. Focus on those separate steps. Menus may look different in newer versions. His hardware is not a performance guarantee for yours.
Watch on YouTube or turn on captions ↗Here is what matters, why it matters and how to check it on your own setup.
A file cannot answer by itself
A downloaded model sits on your disk like a song file. The song needs a player before you can hear it. A model needs software before it can answer.
We call the software doing those calculations an engine. You may also see the word runtime. In this series, both refer to software that runs the model.
Some products include the engine and an easy chat screen in one package. That makes starting easier, but the model is still a separate part.
The three actions beginners mix up
Download means copy the model files onto your disk. Load means prepare those files for use in working memory. Run means use the model to produce a result.
If your app says a model is downloaded, it may still need to be loaded before chatting. If loading fails, the file might be too large for your memory or unsupported by that software.
These are separate actions. Working memory is the temporary space your computer uses while a program runs.
Where Ollama and LM Studio fit
Ollama can run local models and let other programs send requests to them. LM Studio offers a visual desktop app for finding and using supported models. Both include software for running models.
The important question is not “Which name is famous?” It is “Which tool supports my computer, this exact model, and the way I want to work?”
Beginners may prefer visible buttons. People connecting AI to another app may need a service that accepts requests in the background. You do not need to master both on your first day.
Not every model works with every engine
A music player may support some file types and not others. AI software also supports particular model formats and types. A file’s extension is the ending of its name, such as .gguf. We will explain formats later.
Check the engine’s official documentation and the model’s instructions. A text engine that supports one family does not automatically support every image, voice, or video model.
The engine also needs room for the model and other work. Download size alone does not tell you how much working memory is needed.
An engine does not make answers true
Changing software can affect speed, supported features, and ease of use. It does not turn an inaccurate model into a reliable expert.
Privacy also depends on settings. A local engine can be part of a system with online features. Avoid exposing its service to the public internet unless someone qualified has secured it. For a first lesson, keep your test on your own computer.
Try it: label the parts before installing
Make a three-line plan: app or engine name, exact model name, and one harmless task. Check official system requirements before downloading anything.
If you already have an app, find its downloaded models list and its currently loaded model. Are they the same thing? They may not be.
- Get software from its official site.
- Choose one supported model that fits your hardware.
- Download, load, then ask a harmless question.
- If it fails, record the error rather than repeatedly downloading bigger models.
If you uninstall an engine but keep the model file, the file has not vanished. You still need compatible software to run it.
Official facts and real user evidence
Official documentation supports product and model facts. Community discussions show real setups, failures, and questions. A community result is supporting evidence, not a promise that another computer will perform the same way.
Watch a real test. Check what fits your computer.
