THE SHORT ANSWER

RAG finds relevant source passages before a model answers. A citation is useful only when the cited passage supports the claim.

RAG Explained

This explainer follows the retrieval-augmented generation path from question to retrieved information and answer. The written lesson adds citation checking, missing-answer tests, and permission checks.

THE FULL GUIDE

Here is what matters, why it matters and how to check it on your own setup.

01

RAG adds a search step

RAG means retrieval-augmented generation. A search system first retrieves passages from approved sources, then a language model uses them to draft an answer.

This can ground the reply in current private documents without retraining the language model.

02

Retrieval comes before generation

If the correct passage is not retrieved, the model may answer from general patterns or the wrong source.

Inspect search results separately. Do not solve every failure by choosing a larger chat model.

03

A citation must support the sentence

A filename or page number beside a reply is not automatic proof.

Open the cited passage and confirm that it contains the rule, amount, date, or statement claimed in the answer.

04

Missing answers are an important test

Include questions that the document collection cannot answer.

A safe system should say that evidence is missing rather than inventing a confident answer or attaching an unrelated citation.

05

Permissions apply before retrieval

A user should only retrieve passages they are allowed to read. Hiding a citation after the model has already seen restricted text is too late.

Test access controls with made-up documents before connecting confidential information.

06

Try it yourself

Use harmless information for this exercise. Record what you observe instead of treating one result as a universal rule.

  • Choose three clean documents and five questions with known pages.
  • Add two questions whose answers are absent.
  • Check retrieved passages, final claims, citations, and permission boundaries separately.
Quick check: open the recap

Does RAG guarantee a true answer? No. Retrieval, document quality, generation, citations, and access controls can each fail.
