PowerCert Animated Videos: RAM Explained
Watch the opening explanation of temporary memory versus long-term storage. Later sections discuss older memory types and physical parts; you can skip those for now. Use your computer maker’s current guidance before buying or installing memory.

RAM is the space used while work is happening
Imagine a desk and a cupboard. The cupboard holds books when you are not using them. The desk holds the things you are working with right now.
Disk storage is like the cupboard. RAM is like the desk: temporary space for work in progress. The letters stand for Random Access Memory, but you only need to remember the job it does.
The desk comparison is an analogy. RAM is electronic memory inside the computer, not a folder you can open.
Saved files and working memory do different jobs
Your model file can remain on your disk after you shut down. Ordinary RAM needs power to keep its contents. That is one reason you save work to storage.
Deleting a model frees disk space. Closing an app may release some working memory. Those actions solve different problems.
A computer with plenty of free disk space can still be short of RAM. Do not copy your free storage number into the calculator’s RAM field.
A simplified storage-to-work path. Some systems also use graphics memory, which lesson 13 explains.
Installed RAM is not all available for your model
Your operating system, browser, and other programs already use memory. A local AI app needs room for its own work too.
Suppose a computer has 16 GB of RAM and the system and open apps use 6 GB. That leaves about 10 GB at that moment, before allowing for further work. These are made-up numbers, not a tested setup.
Memory use can change while programs run. A calculator estimate is a starting point to check, not a promise that every request will fit.
Long requests can use more working memory
A model needs its learned values available for calculations, plus space for the engine’s work. Longer context settings can increase that requirement.
That is why the download size does not tell you the full amount of memory needed. The exact requirement depends on the model, software, and settings.
Graphics memory may help on supported computers, but it is not safe to add all memory numbers together and assume the model can use the total. We will explain that difference in the VRAM lesson.
Check your computer without opening the case
On Windows 11, open Settings, then System, then About. Look for Installed RAM. This tells you the amount installed, not how much is available to an AI app right now.
On a Mac, open Activity Monitor and select Memory. Physical Memory shows the installed amount, and Memory Used shows current use. Apple also provides a Memory Pressure graph to help assess how memory is serving the workload.
Labels and menus can change with software versions. If your screen differs, use the maker’s help page linked below. You do not need to remove parts or install a scanner for this exercise.
Try it: write down two separate numbers
Record your installed RAM from the system information page. Separately, record free disk space from your storage settings. Label both numbers so you cannot mix them up.
If you already use a local model, observe your system’s memory display before and while it runs. Treat that as a simple observation, not an exact measurement of the model alone; other programs may change their use too.
If your machine struggles, save your work and close unneeded apps before trying a smaller setup. More RAM can relieve a memory limit, but it does not guarantee correct answers or fix every cause of slowness.
Quick check: open the recap
Will deleting old photos increase installed RAM? No. It frees disk storage, which is a different resource.
